Amazon.com Product Description

Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate is tough on dirt but gentle on your clothes and the environment. This non-toxic, biodegradable, and phosphate-free laundry concentrate is specially formulated for high-efficiency and standard machines and features a naturally derived and gentle white flower and bergamot citrus scent.

Completely Natural Cleaning Power for Your Clothes
Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate is tough on dirt and stains, while being completely free of phosphates, optical brighteners, bleach and other ingredients that are harmful for your and your environment. This concentrate is made from a low-foaming blend of naturally derived cleaning agents (coconut-derived surfactants, glycerin), natural water softeners, alkalinity builders, and anti-redeposition agents (sodium citrate, borax), non-animal-derived enzymes to remove protein and starch stains and protect fabrics, plant-derived anti-foaming agents (glycerol monooleate, oleic acid), and cleaning enhancers (calcium chloride).

Non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, biodegradable, and Kosher-certified, Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate is completely phosphate- and dye-free, is safe for septic and greywater systems, and has never been tested on animals.

What's Wrong with Phosphates and Optical Brighteners
Phosphates are natural minerals that, when used in detergents, can reduce water hardness, which allows the detergent's soap to clean more effectively, and prevent dirt from being redeposited back onto the items being cleaned. However, once the phosphates are released back into the environment via household wastewater, the results can be disastrous to the environment.

Phosphates encourage algae growth, which directly leads to a decrease in the oxygen supply in water ways--a situation that can ultimately leads to the deaths of living organisms, and eventually the entire waterway.

Similarly, optical brighteners have long been used to clean our laundry. They help mask any yellowing that may be present in the treated material and makes the material seem brighter and whiter than it would otherwise naturally appear to the eye by creating an enhanced "whiter-than-white" surface that doesn't get clothes any cleaner but simply makes them look that way.

Many of the chemicals in optical brighteners, however, are toxic to fish and other aquatic life, are slow to degrade, and can cause mutations in bacteria. And in terms of human health, exposure to optical brighteners, which remain on laundry by design, can cause eye irritations and skin reactions in sensitive individuals.

Why Clean Naturally?
Unlike many conventional laundry concentrates detergents, the Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate does not create unpleasant fumes, will not leave harmful residues, and is safer for the environment. Plant-derived cleaners are made from renewable resources rather than from petroleum. Studies show that making household cleaners from plant-derived materials uses less energy than making the same cleaners from petroleum. Using less energy helps reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

If every household in the U.S. replaced just one bottle of 50-ounce 2X petroleum-based liquid laundry detergent with the Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate, we could save 233,000 barrels of oil, enough to heat and cool 13,400 U.S. homes for a year! Additionally, thousands of tons of phosphates and other harmful chemicals will be removed from our ecosystem.

Also, concentrated laundry detergents come with great environmental benefits. Each bottle of 2X concentrated detergent is half the size of a bottle of regular laundry detergent and washes the same number of loads. In addition to requiring less fuel to ship the detergent to you, the entire manufacturing process is more efficient--using less water, less packaging, and less fuel.

The Right (Natural) Fragrance for your Home
Our sense of smell is powerful and evocative. Experiencing a scent unfold can transform our mood, transport us to distant places, or connect us through a shared experience. When you use natural cleaners, not only do you care for the health of the environment, you also care for the health of the people in your home. The scents in Seventh Generation household cleaners are created from whole and natural plant essences, and let you clean without harsh or unpleasant chemicals and odors.

White Flower and Bergamot Citrus scent is designed to be luxurious, regenerating, and soothing. It is made from a blend of petitgrain, neroli, bergamot, blood orange, and nutmeg whole plant essences.

About Seventh Generation
Seventh Generation offers a complete line of natural household products designed to work as well as their traditional counterparts, but use renewable, non-toxic, phosphate-free, and biodegradable ingredients as often as possible, and are never tested on animals. Seventh Generation products are healthy and safe for the air, the surfaces, the pets, and the people in your home--and for the environment outside of it. Every time you use Seventh Generation products you make a difference by saving natural resources, keeping toxic chemicals out of the environment, and making the world a safer place for this and the next seven generations.

1 out of 5 stars Be VERY Afraid   June 1, 2008

Given the excellent results I've had with my Vine-provided glass cleaner, I decided that it would be safe to actually shell out money for this Seventh Generation detergent--a decision that made me feel, I regret to say, somewhat morally smug. I had high hopes.
I was initially rather disappointed with its performance; my clothes just weren't getting very clean which was odd given that they're not that dirty at the outset. Ah, well--suck it up, I thought.
However, one of my cats decided I wasn't giving him enough attention and decided to vent his ire on one of my sheer, long-sleeved nylon undershirts. I figured that an overnight pre-soak followed by a hand-laundering the next day would do the trick.
Four semesters of college chemistry haven't provided me with any explanation for what happened next. Not only did the urine odor not wash out, it INTENSIFIED. I emptied the soak water, wrung out the garment, and tried again. It not only resisted all efforts at elimination, it got progressively worse. It was, in fact, one of the most aggressively horrifying stenches I've ever encountered and could be detected all over my apartment.
In addition, the wet garment felt slimy--almost as though it was melting. And--not unsurprisingly--it was still dirty. I decided that it had to be tossed before it permeated the walls.
It then occurred to me that perhaps it could be salvaged, so I fished it out of the trash (I'd taken the precaution of wrapping it in a plastic bag), took a deep breath and held it, and put it into a basin with a solution of Sal Suds (now THAT'S a detergent). Not only was the odor immediately eliminated, but the shirt was CLEAN, i.e., snowy white, and the slimy handfeel was gone. Fortunately, it was warm enough to open the windows, so all ended well.
I would NEVER buy this again. I don't think repeated washings of the same dirty garments is any better for the environment than a mainstream detergent (plus it uses more water), so once this is gone, it won't be replaced. Save your money.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't wash well   January 23, 2008

Unlike the other review, I love the scent, I guess it is subjective. Just go to your local store and smell it.

However, I had the regular HE liquid before and it performed amazing. Recently I only found the 2x HE on the shelf and bought it. It is useless, just like any other natural detergent that doesn't wash well.

If you find the regular HE buy it.

I would write the company, but have done that before and didn't get an answer.

We were very happy with out results using this product. We had never used any Seventh Generation products in the past, but since we enjoy this so much we will certainly look into trying some of their other products :)

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing   October 25, 2007
Don't believe it just because someone told you it is so...

I love Seventh Generation products, so when their website said this product would replace the Citrus Laundry Detergent I figured I would give it a try. All I can say is...yuck! I can't believe they would replace the awesome fresh smelling citrus with this awful smelling product. The bergamot is so strong it is offensive. I can't even stand opening the bottle. I will have to find a new liquid laundry detergent. I even emailed Seventh Generation to complain because it is so bad.

If they replace all their citrus products I will have to quit buying from the company. Very disappointing!! What a shame that they ruined an awesome product for this.

Update**I received a reply from Seventh Generation, and they weren't very responsive. Unless enough people email them to complain, I doubt they will make any changes.
